Finding the Interior Designer that is the Right Fit for You and Your Project
Are you building or remodeling a home? Moving into a new work location? Or maybe you just know it’s time for your home or workspace to get an overhaul.
You see possibilities … you have some ideas … but you also realize you need the support of an interior design professional to make the most of this work and opportunity!
What should you consider? How can you find the best interior designer to partner with to fit your specific needs and project?
Here are several important steps to consider when choosing a designer:
Define your goals for your interior design project.
Consider what you are aiming for and why! Make notes and document your goals and needs by answering these questions:
- Why are we focused on this project?
- What problem(s) are we trying to solve through this project?
- What do we need throughout this process?
- What will be a win(s) at the end of this project?
- Do I have a style preference for this interior design? (Such as modern, traditional, minimalist, etc.)
- What do I want to achieve with this space? (Feel free to acknowledge any inspiration/ideas you have.)
- What is my ideal timeline and investment for this work?
Talk with others and conduct online research.
Who in your life has a home or workspace that is well-designed and styled? Ask these family, friends or neighbors who they worked with and trust for their interior design needs. Then, take that referral and search them out more online.
You can also find more interior designers online by looking at platforms like Houzz or Pinterest. Be sure to search for designers that are local to your area.
To learn more about a specific interior design partner, find them on Instagram, Facebook, or another social platform. Explore their work, read reviews and see if their previous projects complement your style and expectations.
Interview a couple of designers.
You can reach out to multiple interior designers to learn more and consider who you will hire. Interviewing several professionals will help you understand who will be the right fit for you based on their approach, experience, personality and how they communicate and connect with you.
When you talk with each designer, be sure to ask about their process, timelines, budget management, who else they partner with (other sub-contractors depending on what your work needs), and how often they provide updates to their clients. Consider who you would feel comfortable having in your home and workplace to guide this work.
Ask the interior designer you are considering for hire, for a client project reference. When checking references, ask them for anyone you could talk with who completed a similar project to yours. It’s recommended you talk with one or two references.
Throughout these steps (from defining your goals to talking with others/online research to interviews with potential partners), keep some notes about all that you are learning and feeling. You want to find an Interior Designer who will partner with you, who will energize your planning, bring great creativity and experience, and absolutely one that you sense a connection with.
